Variety: The art of variation
The programme begins with Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber's Pentecost Sonata Nr. 13 from the cycle of "Rosary Sonatas". The moment of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit is depicted in painting with flames descending on the apostles. In the Bible, we read that as a result the apostles suddenly babbled and spoke in languages of unimagined variation, inspired by the Holy Spirit. This is exactly what happens in the works by Biber and Johann Joseph Fux in today’s concert: with violins in five different scordaturas, changing passacaglias and ciaconas or varied sarabandas, with a great abundance of instrumentation, a never-ending number of musical ideas and a good sense of humour, the Variety programme becomes a multifaceted spectacle.
