The ballet music from Mozart's «Idomeneo» and Haydn's cantata «Arianna a Naxos», arranged for large orchestra by his pupil Sigismund Neukomm, bring immortal mythological themes to life. As if Beethoven's Second Symphony also gave insight into Midas, an early reviewer described it as «a hideous monster, a stabbed, unchained, writhing dragon».
