KI & Abel3

KI & Abel

The rapid development of AI (KI in German, sounds somewhat like “Cain”) is shaping our present and future. What ethical and legal rules must apply to protect humans from the dangers of AI? The format “IM-PULS” 2026 explores this question in depth.
The discourse is stimulated musically from different perspectives: on the one hand with settings of the biblical story of Cain and Abel, and on the other with Bach's rivalry between Pan and Phoebus and Handel's Icarus myth, which exemplifies how we can become victims of our own inventions. Thanks to its inspiring name, a work by Carl Friedrich Abel is also part of the concept.

ALESSANDRO SCARLATTI (1660–1725)
Overture from the oratorio “Cain overo il primo omicidio” (“Cain, or the first murder”)

CARL FRIEDRICH ABEL (1723–1787)
Piece for Viola da Gamba solo in D major, AbelWV A6
Vivace for Viola da Gamba solo in D major, AbelWV A9

JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH (1685 – 1750)
«Geschwinde, ihr wirbelnden Winde» («Swiftly, you swirling winds»), Cantata BWV 201
(The dispute between Phoebus and Pan)
Phoebus’ aria: «Mit Verlangen drück ich Deine zarten Wangen» («With longing I press your tender cheeks»)
Pan’s aria: «Zu Tanze, zu Sprunge» («To dance, to leap»)

ANTONIO CALDARA (1670 – 1736)
Overture from the oratorio «La morte d'Abel» (“Abel’s death»)

GEORG FRIEDRICH HÄNDEL (1685 – 1759)
«Tra le fiamme” («Amidst the flames»), cantata for soprano and orchestra HWV 170
