Gustav Friedrichson comes from Riga (Latvia), completed his musical education in Freiburg im Breisgau and Strasbourg. His teachers there were Cornelius Schwehr (composition), Ann-Kathrin Brüggemann (baroque oboe) and the musician who remains the most important source for him to this day, Heinz Holliger.
As a baroque oboist, Gustav Friedrichson has played in ensembles such as the dem Freiburger Barockorchester, Vox Luminis, Concerto Stella Matutina, La Cetra, Ensemble Mattheus in Germany, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and France. He regularly plays in the orchestra Les Passions de l'Âme.
His compositions have been performed by Heinz Holliger, Christophe Desjardins, Genevieve Strosser, the Swiss Chamber Soloists, Ensemble Contrechamps and the Latvian Radio Choir in Germany, Switzerland, France and Latvia.
In 2000, he was awarded the Promotion Prize of the Pro Europa Foundation, and in 2008 he received the Latvian Grand Music Prize for his orchestral piece «Chiaroscuro».
